Ashghal Opens Major Interchange on North Road 

Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has opened Al-Sanie Interchange near to Umm al Amad zone for traffic since Wednesday, 20/1/2010. Service roads extending from Sannie Interchange to Sannie zone towards North and to Umm al Amad and Umm Abiriyya zones towards south are also open along with the interchange.

This new Interchange is expected to ease traffic flow to the nearby suburbs including Sannie, Umm al Amad, Umm Abiriyya zones and vast farm areas in the region. The interchange also provides new exit routes for road users to turn to Doha city or Shamal city (Ruwais), replacing all old exit points between Station No 21 and Station No 23, ensuring more traffic safety.  

This stretch represents the second and third phases of North road project undertaken by the Turkish based Tekfen Company costing two billion and 181 million Qatari riyals. The phase II and III of North road is one of the most important projects carried out in the road sector. Whereas the project includes construction of 9 bridges with single track in each direction, 11 single ways, two underpasses (one single track and another dual carriage), construction of four lane dual carriage North road along 93 kilometers, construction of three lane dual carriage Semeisma road along 5 kilometers, construction of a double lane dual carriage way along 7 kilometers and two lane one-way road along 48 kilometers. In addition, there will be a number of connection routes and service roads and maintenance of traffic movement and safety. The project also includes construction and renovation of existing infrastructure with communication network system and street lighting columns in addition to the landscaping works, implementation of intelligent traffic system, which includes boards and traffic signals, four weighing stations, five camel crossings and drainage works.

The second phase consists of 33 km road from the North Bridge to Al Khor Interchange including Semeisma. The works include construction of four-lane dual carriageway with service roads in addition to nine multilevel interchanges and weighbridge, as well as the development of infrastructure network and landscaping. Upgrading Semeisma Interchange along North coastal road is also part of this phase.

The stretch extending from Al Khor Interchange to Al Ruwais is the third phase of the project with a total length of 61 km. This road will link Al Khor Interchange and Al Ruwais towards north. The works include construction of four-lane dual carriageway with service roads on sides, 11 multi-level interchanges, five camel crossing underpasses, protection fence and two weighbridges in addition to the development of infrastructure and landscaping.

Whereas the fourth phase of North Road project will extend from Al Zabara Interchange up to Ras Usheirej, which consists the connection bridge between Qatar and Bahrain. This 35 km stretch project includes construction of four-lane dual carriageway, service roads on sides, six multi level interchanges, three camel underpasses, in addition to development of infrastructure network and landscaping. This phase is presently in the design stage.
