Ashghal opens 2.5 km carriageway of East Industrial Street Extension ahead of schedule

Opening the main road of East Industrial project

​The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ announces the opening of the 2.5 km carriageway of East Industrial Street Extension Project two months ahead of schedule to include the second longest bridge in Qatar with a length of 1.7 km.

The opening ceremony was attended by Eng. Youssef Al-Emadi, Director of Project Affairs, Eng. Bader Darwish, and Manager of Highway Project Department, along with a number of Ashghal officials and engineers and the Contractor.

The project is located between East Street 33 Interchange on Industrial Area Road and Aba Al Sleel Interchange on G Ring Road, where the new opening will provide a free flow of traffic between Hamad Port Road, G Ring Road, Industrial Area Road, Salwa Road and Al Furousiya Street.

Ashghal indicates that 87% of the East Industrial Street project has been completed, with the remaining parts to be opened within the second quarter of 2020 to include three signalized intersections, service roads, pedestrian tunnels, pedestrian and cycle paths.

On this occasion, Engineer Youssef Al-Emadi, Projects Affairs Director, confirmed that the opening of the East Industrial Street Project concludes 2019 Ashghal’s highway openings, which witnessed the opening of other important roads such as Al Majd Road, Al Khor Road and other vital roads.

Al-Emadi explained that the project integrates with other important projects such as G Ring Road, Hamad Port Road, as well as the Industrial Area Road, Salwa Road and Al Furousiya Street, which connects the south of the country to Doha directly without the need to pass from the heart of Doha, in order to shorten the travel time by more than 80%, especially since the bridge that will open today, is considered the longest bridge in Qatar with a length of 1.7 km.

Eng. Bader Darwish, Manager of Highway Project Department, confirmed that the project of East Industrial Street Extension is considered a vital link between arrivals from southern areas such as Mesaieed, Al Wakra and Al Wukair to directly reach the Industrial Area, Salwa Road and Al Furousiya Street to Al Rayyan and Al Gharrafa.

Darwish said that the opening of the carriageway would facilitate the movement of goods between Hamad Port and Hamad International Airport and the industrial area, as well as many surrounding economic facilities such as the Asian Town and commercial centres and Free Zone. Adding that the Qatari element was clear in the project, whether engineers or building materials, where 70% of local materials were used.

Project Benefits:
The road, which consisted of two lanes in each direction, is expanded to three or four lanes in each direction, the existing roundabouts were cancelled, and a substitution of three traffic intersections was established, over which a main bridge crossed by three lanes in each direction, in addition to the collectors adjacent to the road to accommodate more than 12000 Vehicles per hour in both directions.

The pedestrian traffic in the area has been taken into consideration due to the population density formed by the residents of the area especially the labourers, and to ensure their safe movement, the project will provide, upon completion a pedestrian and cycle paths with a length of 10 km, as well as a pedestrian tunnel that facilitates transportation between Asian Town and Industrial Area.

The project also includes the creation of afforestation and landscape works, which varies within East Industrial Road Project, as area of landscaping using solid materials such as gravel amounted to 116 thousand square meters, while landscaping area includes trees, shrubs, flowers and herbs with space to 77 thousand square meters, cultivated in sweet soil suitable for plantation.

Landscaping works also include the establishment of an irrigation network for all landscaping sites, such afforestation activities will contribute in changing the way of life within the area.

Integrated Road Network:
The new East industrial Street project is designed to connect a number of highways with a number of vital streets to the Industrial Area, as well as connecting Hamad Port Road, G Ring Road to Al Furousiya Street, the Industrial Area Road and East Street 33. It facilitates reaching to main Industrial Area streets, such as Al-Kassarat Street to the west and Umm Al Saneem Street to the east.

Movement of Goods:
The opening of the main road in the East Industrial Street Project will provide a direct link to the movement of goods, whether coming from Hamad Port, the Free Zone and economic activities in southern Qatar or Hamad International Airport towards the Industrial Area, as it serves the movement of trucks coming from Al Majd Road, Hamad Port Road, the G Ring Road, the Industrial Area Road or Salwa Road, away from the centre of Doha.

The link between Qatar South and West Doha
Road users coming from Mesaieed, Sealine or Al Wakrah and Al Wukair to directly reach Al Rayyan using Hamad Port Road and G Ring Road to reach Aba Al Sleel Interchange and continue until the newly developed Al Furousiya Street. Residents of Umm Al Saneem, Ain Khalid and Industrial Area road users can also use of the new road towards Mesaieed and Sealine

Vital Utilities:
The project will serve many economic activities, malls, workshops, various factories and transportation company (Karwa). In addition to the Asian Town, the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation, and the Qatar Motor Racing Club.

Three Signalized junctions
Junction No. (02) - East Industrial Road Junction at Street 41

This junction will provide access to road users coming from west (Industrial Area) via Street No. 41 to enter northbound service road heading to Industrial Area Road and East Street 33 Interchange. While northbound service road  exit to Bu Samra Road heading to Asian town, Labour City, Cricket Stadium and several commercial centres.

Junction No.02A - East Industrial Road Junction at Street 1110
Signalized Junction No. 02A, located to the south of junction No.02 will provide access to Asian town and Umm Al Saneem Street via Street 1110.

Junction no.03 - East Industrial Road Junction at Street 47 
Southern Signal-controlled Junction No.03 will provide road users entrance toward another two Junctions 02 and 02A on North of Junction 03, besides providing an access to Industrial Area Road via connection between Street 47 in Industrial area and Northbound service road. 

Facts and Figures:
Upon project works completion, about 70% of local material has been used. The project includes the implementation of infrastructure services with a length of 9,464-meter, the use of 87,854 M3 Concrete, 18,597.52 tons of Rebar used and rainwater drainage tunnels with a length of 1885 meters in addition to 89,269 tons of Asphalt along with the installation of 567 street lights and 270 directional signs as well as the construction of two electrical substations.
