The Public Works Authority’s Main Trunk Sewer (MTS) Project in Doha South has successfully achieved the Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Award Scheme (CEEQUAL)’s Exceptional Achievement Award from the CEEQUAL in the ‘Water Environment and Resources’ Category.

The winners of CEEQUAL’s Exceptional Achievement Awards were announced on 25 November 2019 in a ceremony held at the headquarters of Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) in the United Kingdom. Eng. Khalid Al Qatami, Head of Treatment Plants and TSE Network Projects Section represented Ashghal in the ceremony and received the winner’s award. The ceremony was also attended by the project’s contractor, environmental consultant and the management consultant.

With this award, Ashghal’s Main Trunk Sewer Project in Doha South becomes the first and only project in the Middle East to obtain the CEEQUAL Exceptional Achievement Award. The project was also the first project in the Middle East to obtain CEEQUAL’s Design and Build Award with ‘Good Rating’.

On this occasion, Eng. Khalid Al Qatami, Head of Treatment Plants and TSE Network Projects Section at Ashghal said: “The award reflects Ashghal’s commitment to deliver sustainable infrastructure according to highest international specifications and in compliance with proven sustainability standards. It also demonstrates once again the acknowledgment of Ashghal’s distinguished performance by reputable international organisations, especially Ashghal’s drainage projects that has won several prestigious awards during the last few months.”

Main Trunk Sewer Project

The Main Trunk Sewer is part of the Doha South Sewage Infrastructure Project implemented by the Public Works Authority, with “Jacobs” (formerly CH2M) as the international management consultant. The project aims to serve a number of areas south of Doha through connecting them with the drainage network.

Last April, Ashghal completed the construction works of the Main Trunk Sewer with a total length of approximately 16 km, including three branches; Northern, Western, and Eastern. These branches are gravity-based tunnels which are designed to reduce environmental impacts arising from sewage overflow, control odours in sewage treatment works and conveying system, and decrease the costs for operation and maintenance of foul sewer system.

The main project also includes the construction of seven lateral interceptor sewers with approximately 24 km of microtunnels, which will convey sewage flows from areas in the center and south of Doha to the three branches of the MTS, which will then convey these flows to the existing Doha South Sewage Treatment Plant.

It is worth mentioning that the project is designed to accommodate the population growth expected in Doha South, and has the capacity to be linked to the future infrastructure projects. Once complete, the project will enable the decommissioning of more than twenty foul sewer pumping stations located in the residential and commercial areas in the south of Doha.
