​The Public Works Authority Ashghal is implementing a minor diversion on Duhail Intersection at Al Shamal road to facilitate the works of Duhail Intersection upgrade project starting Friday 25 January 2019 until 31 January 2019, in coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic.

Ashghal pointed an implementation of a partial closure on the intersection to road users travelling from Al Khafji Street towards Al Gharrafa Street and Doha, road users travelling from Doha towards Al Gharrafa Street or wishing to make a U-turn back towards Doha.

During the period of traffic change, Izghawa intersection at exit 5 of Al Shamal road will become the access point to the intersection in front of traffic between the eastern and western areas and Al Shamal road, as well as Al kharaitiyat and Al Kheesa intersection and Umm Slal Mohammed Intersection.

To ease the inconvenience to the public, Ashghal recently opened a 3.5 kilometre road parallel to Al Shamal Road on December 2018 linking Izghawa and Al Gharrafa areas. The new road extends from Izghawa Street to Al Oyoun Street and provides exit and access to Al Shamal Road to serve as an alternative route to Duhail roundabout that is scheduled to close.


 

West Bay to Al Gharrafa 

During the partial closure, as shown in the attached map, road users travelling from West Bay via Al Khafji Street heading towards Al Gharrafa take a right turn at Arab League Street to Izghawa Interchange or taking a right turn on Duhail Street or Duhail roundabout which is partially closed to access Al Shamal Road  and exit at exit 5 to reach Izghawa Interchange, they should take a left on the main bridge then another left turn at the next traffic signal towards Izghawa Interchange to join the newly constructed road to access Al Gharrafa and the malls in the area.

West Bay to Al Gharrafa

Road users travelling from West Bay via Al Khafji Street heading towards Doha have the option of either taking a right turn at Arab League Street or , Duhail Street or taking a right at Duhail roundabout that is partially closed to access Al Shamal Road  and use exit 5 to reach Izghawa Interchange, they should take a left turn on the main bridge to Al Shamal Road towards Doha.

Doha to Al Gharrafa

Road users travelling from Doha heading towards Al Gharrafa via Al Shamal Road are to take exit 5 to reach Izghawa Interchange. At Izghawa Interchange they should take a left on the main bridge towards Izghawa continuing straight until they reach the second set of traffic signals and take a left turn to join the newly constructed road, they will be able to access Al Gharrafa and the malls in the area.

Making a U-turn back to Doha

Road users traveling along Al Shamal Road coming from Doha who wish to make a U-turn back to Doha, will be required to use exit 5 to reach Izghawa Interchange. At this interchange, they should take a U-turn on the main bridge to  Al Shamal Road towards Doha.

The Public Works Authority will install road signs advising motorists of the changes on the road. Ashghal requests all road users to abide by the 60 kilometer speed limit and follow the road signs to ensure their safety.

New Project

The Duhail Intersection Upgrade project consists of works of 3.3 kilometre of valued at approximately QAR800 million.  The upgrade consists of a three-level interchange including two (2) new bridges providing a free flow connectivity. Al Shamal Bridge will be replaced to an Intersection consisting of three levels (3) in each direction. A new four (4) lane bridge will be constructed in each direction between Al Khafji Street towards Al Gharrafa Street.

Al Duhail intersection will be replaced with a new signalised junction under Al Shamal Bridge as well as removing Sheikh Faisal Roundabout in addition, the project will construct an underpass which will allow road users to exit Al Shamal Road on to the service roads to access the nearby malls. It will also serve as the connection from Al Gharrafa Street towards Al Shamal.

The project consists of a total of 5 kilometres of pedestrian and cycle paths will be along Duhail and Gharrafa areas and Al Shamal Road.

The upgrade of Duhail Intersection will provide a free flow in the area will alleviate traffic congestion and reduce travel time by up to 90%. It is expected to be complete in Q4 2021.
