Partial Opening of Al Thumama Intersection as Part of the Upgrade Project on E-Ring Road and Najma Street

2/8/2016

Two newly constructed lanes in each direction on Najma Street and the E-Ring Road were opened to traffic, while the remaining works will be ongoing in both directions for the completion of the works.

The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ announced the partial opening of Al Thumama Intersection, which was converted from a roundabout to a signal-controlled intersection. The new intersection was opened to traffic on Sunday, 7th of February 2016, as part of the upgrade project on E-Ring Road and Najma Street.

Two newly constructed lanes in each direction on Najma Street and the E-Ring Road were opened to traffic, while the remaining works will be ongoing in both directions for the completion of the works, as shown in the attached map. The fully developed intersection, which will include four lanes in each direction on E-ring Road with three dedicated turning lanes in each direction, and three lanes in each direction on Najma Street with three dedicated turning lanes in each direction, will be completed in Q1 of 2016.

The Upgrade project on E-Ring Road and Najma Street aims to develop approximately three kilometres of Najma Street in order to expand it, in addition to the construction of two new signal-controlled intersections, and the development of approximately 3.3 km of the E-Ring Road in order to expand it and increase the number of its lanes to four lanes in each direction. The project works also include the development of another intersection at Oqba Bin Nafea Street and Najma Street.

The project includes the implementation of landscaping works, as well as the provision of pedestrian and cyclists pathways, car parking, and median islands, and the construction of infrastructure utilities in the area.

It is worth mentioning that the construction of Al Thumama Intersection is considered an important step in the Upgrade project on E-Ring Road and Najma Street, as it will contribute to the enhancement of traffic flow in the area.

The implementation of the project has started in Q3 of 2015 by a local contracting company with a contract worth approximately 240 million Qatari Riyals. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
