The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ has opened a new bridge and underpass at the Mesaimeer Interchange, where a new bridge has been partially opened to provide a free flow of traffic from Rawdat Al Khail Street to Industrial Area Road with a length of 1300 meters, and a 450-meter underpass has been opened to connect traffic coming from Doha Expressway towards the Industrial Area Road.

The opening resulted in removing the temporary traffic light that connects Rawdat Al Khail Street, Doha Expressway and   Industrial Area Road, and they contributed to breaking traffic and achieving great traffic flow in the area.

On this occasion, Project Engineer Hassan Al Ghanim affirmed that the new openings contribute to improving traffic at the interchange, especially as the temporary main traffic light on the interchange was removed, which helped provide free traffic flow between Doha Expressway and E-Ring Road and Rawdat Al Khail Street with the industrial area road.

He explained that the two lanes were opened on the new bridge to connect those coming from Rawdat Al Khail Street towards the industrial area road directly, adding that an underpass has also been opened to connect traffic coming from Doha Expressway.

Mesaimeer Interchange Openings

With this opening, Mesaimeer interchange witnessed several important openings, the first interchange was in November 2019 with a length of 220 meters, to provide a free exit to serve those coming E Ring Road and heading to Rawdat Al Khail Street.

This opening was followed by the opening of the second underpass at the Mesaimeer interchange with a length of one kilometer in December 2019, to provide a free flow of traffic in front of those coming from E Ring Road towards the industrial area road.

Features of the Interchange

The new three-level interchange is the first of its kind in Qatar and it includes nine underpasses providing free flow traffic. The 6.1 km long interchange consists of three to four lanes in each direction to accommodate about 20,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

The interchange also contains two major bridges. One of them connects Rawdat Al Khail Street and Industrial area road in both directions, and the other one connecting E-Ring Road with the southern part of Doha Expressway in one direction, ensuring a smooth flow of traffic in all directions.

The interchange also includes pedestrian and cycle paths along 23km with three pedestrian bridges.

Hexagonal Interchange

The Mesaimeer Interchange is the first of its kind in Qatar connecting six main roads, namely E-Ring Road, Doha Expressway, southern part of Doha Expressway, Sabah Al Ahmed Corridor, Industrial Area Road and Rawdat Al Khail Street.

The interchange also provides a vital traffic link between the south, central and north of the country. It links traffic from the south through the southern part of Doha Expressway, main carriageway of Doha Expressway and Al Shamal Road.

It also connects traffic between Industrial area road and the heart of Doha through a connection to Rawdat Al Khail Street, which intersects with D ring and C Ring Road, as well as between the busy areas of Nuaija, Al Thumama, Bu Hamour, Al Maamoura, Mesaimeer providing an easy access to Al Wakra, Al Wukair and the Industrial area
It is located in a vital area that has many facilities including Al Thumama Stadium, one of the World Cup stadiums, where the interchange has three pedestrian bridges to ease people’s access to Al Thumama Stadium.

The interchange also serves many important educational, health and commercial facilities such as the Medical Commission, Meteorological Department, many schools, and health centers and nearby shopping malls.

The interchange also includes a sophisticated intelligent transport system where surveillance cameras and vehicle number monitor will be installed along with an emergency traffic system to ensure better traffic control in Qatar.

Integral to Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor

The Mesaimeer Interchange integrates with Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor linking Al-Wattiyyat Interchange, which is a strategic link between the southern part of Doha Expressway and its main highway. This link provides a free flow traffic between the north and south of the country through Doha. The project is one of the vital interchanges in the country, with two levels comprising three bridges and four underpasses for easy access of vehicles to nearby residential area of Al Thumama, Mesaimeer, Bu Hamour, Nuaija, Al Wakra and Al Wukair. The interchange provides a free flow traffic for commuters from these areas to Hamad International Airport, to southern areas, Doha and northern areas of the country.
