Students of Al Shorouq Model School for Boys Participate with Ashghal in Planting Trees at Al Watiyyat Interchange within Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor

Al Shorouq Model Boys School students planting trees at Al Watiyyat Interchange

​A group of students from Al Shorouq Model School for Boys Participated with the Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ in Planting Trees at Al Watiyyat Interchange within Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor, in conjunction with the celebrations of the World Diabetes Day last Thursday 14 November 2019. The event comes as part of the “Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees” campaign launched by the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar to “Plant Million Trees” in coordination with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.

The event was Mr. Rashed Abdulrahman Al Mahmoud, Qatar Diabetes Association, Mr. Hassan Al-Muhammadi, Public Relations and Communications Department Manager at Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Mr. Abdulla Saad Al Saad, Public Relations and Communications Department Manager at Ashghal, Ms. Sheikha Al Jufairi, CMC member for Constituency 8, Ms. Fatima Al Kuwari, CMC member for Constituency 9, and Ms. Moza Ftais, Administrative Supervisor, Al Shorouq Model School for Boys.

On this occasion, Mr. Rashed Abdulrahman Al Mahmoud, Qatar Diabetes Association, said: “We were delighted with the invitation to participate in the planting activity today and highlight the importance of participation of entities and institutions in various fields in helping the association to provide moral, material and awareness support to diabetics and their families. Such activities contribute to enhancing the values ​​of human solidarity and building a compassionate society.” He added that the ongoing campaign to plant trees around the country and increase the green areas will have a great positive effect not only in preserving the environment and beautifying roads but also in raising the morale of patients and encourage them to engage in light sports activities as it helps them to control their blood sugar levels, let alone the importance of sports and healthy life in the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

For his part, Mr. Hassan Al-Muhammadi, Public Relations and Communications Department Manager at Ministry of Education and Higher Education, said “It is important to carry out events and activities that link what students learn in the classroom with what they practice on the ground, especially with regard to instilling the values of belonging and raising awareness of the role of everyone in the development and beautification of the country. We thank Ashghal and the campaign organisers for contributing to the creation of an integrated learning experience on the importance of the environment.” He added: "There is great keenness of the students to attend, which reflects the success of the planting campaign in attracting students of all age groups.”

Commenting on the activity’s conjunction with the World Diabetes Day, Mr. Abdulla Saad Al Saad, Manager of Public Relations and Communications Department at Ashghal said: “During the implementation of the planting and beautification campaigns, we are keen to involve all segments of society and link our activities to international and internal events celebrated by state institutions. This is part of our commitment to the principles of social responsibility as well as the fact that the campaign has a positive impact on all environmental, educational, humanitarian and sports fields.” He pointed out that planting the roads and areas is of great benefit in encouraging the adoption of a healthy lifestyle as well as walking which is very good -under certain conditions- for diabetics.

Ms. Sheikha Al Jufairi, CMC member for Constituency 8, pointed out that the ongoing planting campaign will change the general image of Qatar and contribute to creating a healthy and aesthetic environment, and added: “Engaging young children is important for their future contribution to building their homeland.”

Ms. Fatima Al Kuwari, CMC member for Constituency 9, said: “it’s nice to see the cooperation of all entities to make the campaign a success and plant trees on a large scale with the participation of students to what will be an environmental and aesthetic legacy for them and for future generations.

Ms. Moza Ftais, Administrative Supervisor at Al Shorouq Model School for Boys expressed her happiness with the participation of Al Shorouq School students in today’s planting event, and said: “This is a good initiative that will contribute to raising young generations to love healthy environment and appreciate the beautiful and civilized look that the trees and green spaces give.”

Participants included student Ahmed Islam, who said: "I loved the activity today and I hope to do more of these activities." as well as student Abdullah Burshaid, who said, "I came with my colleagues to plant trees and preserve the environment of my country."

“We planted trees together to make our country green,” said student Mohammed Bouainain. "I loved planting trees and beautifying my beloved country," said student Hamad al-Marri.

Al Watiyyat Interchange
Al Watiyyat Interchange is located in Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor implemented by Ashghal within its Expressway Programme. It is considered a Key link between the north and south of the country via Doha, and contributes to saving up to 60% of travel time. The interchange includes 3 bridges and 4 underpasses, and it facilitates access to Al Thumama, Bu Hamour, Mesaimeer and Nuaija areas. It also facilitates access from Al Wakra and Ras Buaboud Stadiums to Al Thumama Stadium. The interchange features 2 pedestrian bridges  6 pedestrian and cycle underpasses to facilitate the safe access of spectators to watch the matches.

The project includes landscaping covering 82,500 square metres and around 1037 trees. The project also offers 23 km of pedestrian and bicycle paths within Al Watiyyat and Mesaimeer Intechanges.
