Mesaimeer Pumping Station and Outfall

Brief description

The Mesaimeer Pumping Station and Outfall Project is considered one of the most important infrastructure development projects implemented by Ashghal. It is the second phase of the Mesaimeer Surface and Storm Water Drainage Tunnel Project which was completed in the late 2016.

The project aims to enhance the rainwater accommodation capacity in the Doha South areas which will serve more than 270 square kilometres and about 23 main car tunnels during the rainy season. This will contribute to reducing the negative impacts on the environment and the population, in addition to preserving the foundations of buildings and reducing land subsidence. The project will also help lower the groundwater level and reduce pumping costs in construction projects in the country.

Benefits

The first part of the project is the outfall which is constructed with a length of ten kilometres from the seashore and is one of the longest outfall tunnels in the world, which ensures the preservation of the marine environment in the country.

The second part of the project consists of a pumping station with 10 pumps and auxiliary facilities. It is located at the end of Mesaimeer Tunnel South of Hamad International Airport, and operates at a capacity of 19.7 cubic metres per second. Its function is to pump water from Mesaimeer Tunnel to the new outfall tunnel.

The project ensures the preservation of the marine environment, as the water it pumps complies with the international environmental standards, and is discharged 10 km off-shore to reduce the effect on environment.
