Commencement of the Roads and Infrastructure Project in Al-Wajba East, Package 3

The Public Works Authority 'Ashghal' announced the commencement of the Roads and Infrastructure Project in Al-Wajba East, Package 3, which aims to develop roads and infrastructure services in the area. Located west of Umm Al-Dome Street, south of Dukhan Road and north of Rawdat Al-Naser Street, the project will upgrade the network of internal streets, provide parking bays, construct pedestrian and cycle paths, and will also develop drainage networks in order to address local residents’ needs and to serve urban growth in the future.

Eng. Fahad Muhammad Al-Otaibi, Roads Projects Department’s Head of Western Areas Section in the Roads Projects Department in Ashghal, said: “Once completed, this package will serve 417 plots of the citizens’ sub-divisions, as it will provide an integrated road network with a total length of 23.5 km, with the relevant traffic safety elements, including street lighting systems and poles, directional signs, and road marking. In addition, the project works will provide 2,280 parking bays to enhance the traffic flow and improve connectivity with public facilities in the area, as it will serve many educational facilities and commercial stores, as well as Al-Wajba Health Center and local mosques.”

He added: “A total of 45 km pedestrian and cycle paths will be provided within the scope of the project to encourage a healthy lifestyle. In addition, 854 lighting poles will be installed.”

As for the infrastructure services development, Eng. Al-Otaibi pointed out that with the completion of construction works, “the project will develop a 14.1-km long foul sewer network, a 23.1-km long surface and groundwater drainage network, an 11.8-km long treated sewage effluent (TSE) network, and 2.6 km of potable water pipes, which will be extended and connected to the main drinking water network.”

The project works have been divided into two geographical zones, to be implemented successively, and each phase will take one year to complete. The whole project works are scheduled to be completed in Q4 of 2023.

As part of Ashghal's support for local manufacturers, and under its “Ta’heel” initiative launched in 2017, local materials and manufacturers will be relied on in implementing most of the project works, with the local component set to reach 85% of total materials. Local materials and components include gabbro, lighting poles and luminaires, directional signs, foul sewer and rainwater drainage pipes, asphalt and prefabricated manholes, and concrete and reinforcement steel.

This project is carried out by Galfar Al Misnad Engineering and Contracting Company, at a cost of about QAR 314 million. It is part of the Local Areas Infrastructure Program being executed by the Public Works Authority, among other development projects distributed nationwide.
