Completion of services for about 3000 sub-divisions as part of the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project for New Citizens’ Sub-divisions in Al Wukair South

The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ announced completion of services for about 3000 sub-divisions as part of the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project for New Citizens’ Sub-divisions in Al Wukair South. This comes within Ashghal’s commitment to fulfill its plan to develop roads and infrastructure in various regions of Qatar, to deliver integrated infrastructure for new citizens' lands to facilitate for building their homes.

Eng. Salem Al Shawi, Assistant Roads Projects Department Manager at Ashghal clarified that the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project for New Citizens’ Sub-divisions in Al Wukair South, known as Muaither Al Wukair, is one of the roads and infrastructure development projects implemented by Ashghal in Al Wakra Municipality, in order to meet the needs of population expansion in the area. The project covers an area of 1,338 hectares. Besides residential plots, it serves 16 schools, 32 mosques and 17 commercial entities. The infrastructure elements provided for these plots include high quality safe road networks of 221 km, sewage networks of 100 km, storm water drainage networks of 114 km, drinking water lines of 123 km, electricity and streetlight lines, and associated facilities.

Eng. Salem Al Shawi also clarified that the project works included development of two main roads at North and West of the project to facilitate traffic flow within the area, reducing travel time for residents and visitors in reaching their destinations, as these roads are to be linked soon with New Al Wakra Road and Al Wukair Main Road within other Ashghal projects under pipeline to be awarded soon.

On the other hand, Eng. Ahmed Al Obaidly, Head of South Areas Section of Roads Projects Department, commented that Ashghal will start to implement a new project next week, which is Package 8 of the Roads and Infrastructure Project in Al Mashaf West, to serve about 1462 plots, of which around 650 plots are within Al Wukair South. The project is valued at 515 million Qatar Riyals, and includes road works of about 41 kilometers, 1737 lighting poles, 650 parking slots, 64 kilometers of surface and ground water drainage networks, 22 kilometer long sewage network and a 2 kilometer long TSE network.

During a field visit to the project site, Mr. Abdul Hadi Khamis, Director of Public Affairs Department in Al Wakra Municipality expressed delight to see the developed area, which was previously a desert without any service, and transformed to a place with integrated infrastructure, motivating citizens to start building their homes straightaway.

For his part, Mr. Jaber bin Muhammad Al Suwaidi, member of Central Municipal Council for Constituency 20 commented that completion of project works at this level is something to be proud of, because it includes everything a citizen needs to build his home including roads, streetlight, walkways, drainage networks, potable water and other infrastructure needs of the area.

 Eng. Hamad Al Mejaba, Project Manager in Roads Projects Department, said: “Owing to Ashghal’s commitment to support local manufacturers and products, most of the works in all the above packages of Roads and Infrastructure Development Project for Citizens’ Subdivisions in Al Wukair South were executed depending on local materials and manufacturers and the local components used in the project works amount 65% of materials.”

Eng. Hamad added: “Ashghal was keen to accelerate the pace of works, motivating contractors and urging them to deliver projects as per schedule. Ashghal achieved the works in all four packages of the project with a record of 11 million man hours without lost time injuries (LTI).”

It is noteworthy that package one of the project included construction of internal road network, sewage network, electricity network and drinking water network to serve all residential and commercial units. Out of this, 37 km of road network, about 28 km of sewage networks and 34 km of rainwater and groundwater drainage network have been completed serving 1026 plots.

As for package two, which serves 1052 plots, 22 km of sewage networks and 25.8 km of rainwater and groundwater drainage networks were completed, besides 72 km of the drinking water network and 52 km of roads.

The completed works within package three include 20 km of drainage network, 29 km of storm water and groundwater drainage network, internal and external roads network of about 75 km, to serve 349 residential plots.

Package four of the project served 809 plots and included completion of 28 km long drainage network, 27.4 km of rainwater and groundwater drainage network, 20 km of potable water network and construction of 57 kilometers of internal and external roads network, besides communications and electricity networks to serve all residential and commercial units in the area.
