Ashghal Signs MoU with Qatar Cyclists Center of Ministry of Culture and Sports regarding Fast Cycling Track
On Tuesday, 25th August 2020, the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar at the Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Qatar Cyclists Center of the Ministry of Culture and Sports regarding fast cycling track.


The dignitaries who attended the MoU signing ceremony include Eng. Yousef Al-Emadi, Director of Projects Affairs at Ashghal, Dr. Abdulaziz Jaham Al Kuwari, President of Qatar Cyclists, Eng. Mohamed Arqoub Al-Khaldi, Chairman of the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places, Mr. Abdel Fattah AL Saadi, Member of Board of Directors, Mr. Abdulla Al Hammadi, Member of Qatar Cyclists Center, Mr. Ali Bin Towar Al Kuwari, Media Committee In-charge.

The signing of MoU was held keeping the social distancing and all other precautionary measures required to ensure safety of everyone in light of the Corona pandemic crisis.

On this occasion, Eng. Yousef Al-Emadi, Director of Projects Affairs at Ashghal, stated that the MoU signed today with the Qatar Cyclists Center aims at educating the community and spreading the culture of cycling, in addition to using cycling as a safe and healthy means of transportation. He also added that Ashghal seeks to create infrastructure that contributes to enhance sport culture among all segments of society, through provision of necessary requirements and Ashghal is all set to provide a network of cycling and pedestrian paths of about 2,650 km by the year 2022.

Eng. Mohamed Arqoub Al-Khaldi, Chairman of the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar at Ashghal said the fast track for cyclists has been constructed and opened to the public.  The 33km long track allows speeding up to 50 km per hour. Through the MoU, Ashghal and Qatar Cyclists Center will provide all the necessary services to fast track users, such as electric bike parking spaces to serve cyclists in emergencies, as well as installation of necessary signage, periodic maintenance of irrigation systems, fast track asphalt and street lightings.

For his part, Dr. Abdulaziz Jaham Al Kuwari, President of Qatar Cyclists, praised efforts taken to provide a secure and connected network for cyclists. He stressed the importance of a joint-cooperation between various entities in the country in order to promote a healthy lifestyle and exercise. He added, "We seek to encourage all family members to use the fast track, including provision of first aid to those who are on the track and providing logistics services using motorcycles to provide emergency assistance." Through the MoU, events will be organized in cooperation with Ashghal including safety campaigns, first aid training for emergencies, as well as awareness sessions to educate riders on the right and safe riding methods through cycle paths.

Following the signing of the MOU, Mr. Abdel Fattah Al Saadi, Member of Board of Directors at Qatar Cyclist Center, said: We hope that this agreement will contribute to encouraging all segments of society to practice sport on a regular basis.

Mr. Abdullah Al Hammadi, Member of Qatar Cyclists Center, said that through the agreement, first aid will be provided to Fast Track users and assistance will be provided during emergencies using motorcycles.

Ali Bin Towar Al Kuwari, Media Committee In-charge at Qatar Cyclists Center, said: We are pleased to sign the agreement today, which will help provide services to users of the fast cycling track on Al Khor Road.

The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar

The committee works in coordination with several ministries and other entities of the State such as Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Qatar Museums Authority, Qatar Railway Company, Private Engineering Bureau among others. This Committee is responsible for five major tasks including construction of central public parks, provision of dedicated tracks for pedestrians and bicycles, development of Doha Corniche, development of Central Doha, and increasing afforestation and greenery areas
