Two Projects for construction and development of roads and infrastructure worth QR 433 million.
Five contracts for drainage network projects worth QR 533 million.
Two building projects for Kindergartens and schools worth QR 429 million .
On Wednesday June 13, 2006, the Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ signed nine contracts in the areas of development and construction of infrastructure, roads, buildings and drainage systems with a total value of QR 1.4 billion.
The contracts include two road development projects namely Lahwilah Road and Rayyan Road and related infrastructures; five contracts for the implementation of drainage network related projects that include a number of drainage networks, surface water and groundwater projects, comprising dewatering project at Kharitiat zone, construction of a drainage network for Al Khor, establishment of a sewerage network in several residential areas and connecting them with a pumping station (at Doha North treatment plant).
Additionally, execution of a drainage network for Gharafa zone, construction of drainage network for Gharafa and Rayyan; and two educational building projects comprising construction of ten kindergartens and four new schools.
1. Road Projects:
Lahwilah Road Upgrading:
The Huwailah road project is a strategic route in the north-east of Qatar linking RasLaffan Industrial City. The project worth QR 334 million, and was awarded to Bin Omran Trading and Contracting Company.
The 16 km stretch of road will be expanded to facilitate smooth traffic to the Industrial City for light as well as heavy vehicles. The road is located mainly along the western border and partly on the northern border of RasLaffan Industrial City, the main hub of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) production. Upgrading this road will facilitate future expansion of the industry.
The major components of the project include:
- Linking the RasLaffan area with the recently completed North Road at Lahwilah Interchange (66)
- 8.5 km long Dual carriage highway with three to four lanes in both directions, separated by a median
- 7.5 km highway connecting the adjacent residential areas
- Four signaled interchanges at various locations
In addition, the project also comprises infrastructure development such as a rainwater drainage system, a waste water treatment network, drinking water supply line, and extension of lines of power supply, telecommunications and intelligent transport systems (ITS).
2.Upgrade and Beautification of Rayyan Road:
This is an important project within the highway development projects of Ashghal. The contract, worth QR 98 million, is awarded to HBK Contracting and QBS Inc. The project includes development of a 1.8 km stretch of Rayyan Road located between Diwan Street and Jassim Bin Mohammed Street, forming an important outlet to Souq Waqef. The stretch will be reconstructed as a two-lane dual carriage highway with six traffic signals at intersections. The major components include:
- A new traffic signal at the intersection of Rayyan Road, Kahraba Street, Abdullah Thani Street and near the entrance of private parking to EmiriDiwan
- A new traffic signal at the intersection of Jasem bin Mohamed Street with Mesat Street
- Upgrading the Rayyan Road intersection and Jasem bin Mohamed Street intersection
- Replacing Jasem bin Mohamed Street roundabout and Wade Musheireb Intersection with new signaled intersection
The new streets and footpaths will get high-quality granite pavement with uniform style throughout the Musheireb properties area surrounding Doha city.
An underground pedestrian corridor will be built along Jasem bin Mohamed Street. at the north of Musheireb Street intersection, linking Souq Waqef and the garden near the Grand Mosque at the heart of the city.
The contractor who implements this project is required to retain entrances to all the properties around, as well as opening at least one lane in both directions during the construction process.
3.Drainage Projects
Kharatiyat Groundwater Lowering Project:
The project involves establishment of a groundwater drain system to lower the groundwater to a deep 400m well in order to alleviate flooding of residential properties in Kharatiyat zone and provide new subdivisions and other developments for the entire area.
The project is scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2013. The contract, estimated at QR 109 million, is awarded to Qatar Building Company with Hyder Consultancy providing consultancy services.
4. Construction of Gharafa Area Sewerage Network:
The project consists of implementation of sewerage system for the disposal of collected water to the pumping station, which includes more than 23 km of drainage pipelines, more than 760 Manholes, 1,500 house connections and more than 15 km of sub-links. The project, worth QR 52.5 million, is awarded to Qatar Building Company.

5.Construction of Drainage Network at Gharafa Rayyan:
The project consists of establishment of a sewerage disposal system for pumping the collected sewage to the pumping station, which includes the establishment of more than 620 manholes, 950 house connections and more than 11 km ofsub links, in addition to 2 km long micro-tunnel pipelines with 400 mm diameter. The project, worth QR 56 million, will be implemented by Qatar Building Company.
6.Construction of drainage lines at various residential areas connecting with PS70 and Doha North STW:
This project consists of creating sewage systems and house connections in the neighborhood areas of Gharafa, Gharafa- Rayyan, Ezghava and Kharitiat, linking them with Pumping Station No.70 (PS70) through a sewer tunnel, where waste water will be pumped to Doha North STW. The house connections will be completed only after commissioning of PS70 and Doha North STW. The entire project is to be completed by July 2013.
7.Al Khor Sewerage Project (Qatar North):
This project comprises of extension of the sewer network at Al Khor to include all residential neighborhoods in the region. The project, worth QR 122 million, is implemented by Lotus Company and is expected to completed by the first quarter of 2015.
Construction of (ten) new kindergartens around Doha and surrounding villages (Package 5):
Ashghal signed a contract worth QR 204 million with Imperial Trading and Contracting Company for construction of a number of kindergartens in different parts of the country. The areas include Doha, Rayyan, Dahayin, Mirqab, Thumama, FerijMurrah, Kharitiat, Um Salal Mohamed, Um Salal Ali and Al Wajbah.
9.Four New Schools around Doha and villages (Package 3):
Further, Ashghal signed a contract for construction of four new schools, in different parts of the state, involving Doha, Laqta, Al Asiri, Old Airport and Hazam-el-Markhia areas. The project, estimated at QR 225 million, is awarded to Al Jaber Trading and Contracting.
