Commencement of upgrading works on Al Sadd Intersection

The Public Works Authority “Ashghal” announces the commencement of upgrading works on Al Sadd intersection, as part of the Road Improvement Works in Various Areas of Greater Doha - Phase 9. These works aim to expand the intersection, develop infrastructure utilities’ services, and upgrade Al Sadd Street and Jawaan Street at a length of 3.2 km.

On this occasion, Eng. Mooza Al Sowaidi, Ashghal’s Head of Doha City Projects Section in “Ashghal”, emphasized the importance of Al Sadd Junction and its significant location at the intersection of two of the most congested streets in the area; Al Sadd Street and Jawaan Street. Both routes serve many service facilities, shops, commercial centers, and educational and health institutions. These works are part of Ashghal's efforts to improve the existing services and utilities and upgrade the road network in Doha City to cope with the national economic development and social growth requirements in Qatar.

The project’s scope will include road developments at a total length of 3.2 km, providing 6.4 km of pedestrian footpaths and cycle paths, landscaping works, and upgrading street lighting systems. It will also improve infrastructure utilities in the area, such as sewer network rehabilitation, upgrading the TSE network and surface water drainage network, and providing protection for the existing power lines and telecommunications cables.

Further to upgrading the services of the infrastructure utilities, the project will also improve the signalised intersection to strengthen the traffic flow in the area at Al Sadd Intersection.

The project will be implemented by JH Construction Company under the supervision of Gulf Engineering and Industrial Consultancy. Construction works are scheduled to be fully completed in the 4th quarter of 2021.

Traffic Diversion
It’s worth noting that in order to facilitate the implementation of these roadworks, the number of lanes available on Al Sadd Intersection will be reduced for about 1.6 km on Al Sadd Street in the section between Al Amir Street and C Ring Road, on Friday 21 August 2020. The diversion will be implemented as follows:

  • For commuters on Jawaan Street heading towards Sport Intersection or Nasir Bin Sulaiman Al Suwaidi Intersection, one left-turn lane will be closed.
  • For commuters on Al Sadd Street coming from Al Amir Street, the number of lanes will be reduced to four lanes (instead of five), as the through lane dedicated for vehicles going straight ahead will be closed.
  • Motorists on Al Sadd Street coming from C Ring Road, will have the number of lanes reduced from six to four, as the through lane and left-turn lane will be closed.

This diversion will remain effective until 31 March 2021, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior’s General Traffic Department.

The Public Works Authority will install road signs to advise road users of this closure. Ashghal requests all road users to abide by the speed limit, and to follow the road signs to ensure their safety.
