Re-opening Al Gharrafa Bridge to traffic in both directions

The public works authority ‘Ashghal’ announces re-opening Al Gharrafa Bridge (known as Immigration Bridge) to traffic in both directions on Friday evening, 12 July 2019 after completing the necessary maintenance works of the bridge.

Engineer Mohamed Arqoub Al-Khaldi, head of Doha City Section, Road Projects Department at Ashghal said, Al Gharrafa Bridge was closed on 9 June this year for emergency maintenance work. The time factor in addition to the space available for equipment work was a challenge since maintenance work is scheduled to be completed within one month. This is due to the importance of the bridge as it is located in a very vital area which witnesses heavy traffic daily and connects the north and south of Doha, as well as facilitating access to many malls and commercial markets.

Five rigs were used to do the necessary maintenance works on the bridge, the work included the installation of concrete reinforced beams at a depth of 14 meters below the ground level to support the bridge deck, in addition to pouring more than 2500 cubic meters of concrete and the use of 200 tons of iron. 700 meters of asphalt were paved.

Ashghal worked around the clock to ensure that traffic flow on the bridge returned as soon as possible, taking into consideration the highest safety standards, the designs were in place within several days and more than 150 workers and engineers were involved to undertake the emergency maintenance work. It is worth mentioning that Ashghal will continue the maintenance work below the bridge.
