Public Works Authority (Ashghal) intends to appoint a qualified contractor to repair and maintain their highway structures on ad hoc basis for a period of two (02) years. The primary aim of repair and maintenance works on a bridge is to keep highway structure above minimum performance level and extend structure life.
Delaying or not undertaking the required treatments will result in worsening the structure condition and can escalate the feasible treatment or activity from preservation to replacement. The latter will result in extensive work and higher cost. A viable alternative is timely and effective bridge maintenance to assure their structural integrity and extend their useful life before they require replacement. Effective bridge preservation actions are intended to delay the need for costly reconstruction or replacement actions by applying preservation strategies and actions on bridges while they are still in good or fair con¬dition and before the onset of serious deterioration.
Emergency repairs on structures that suffered damages from natural disasters or damages from external causes will ensure the structure’s restoration to their pre-disaster condition. These emergency repairs are undertaken after the occurrence of a disaster or a bridge strike to restore the strength and serviceability of the bridge structure.
The scope of work for a period of two years involves:
A. Routine Maintenance Works for Highway Structures as per the Engineer’s requirements.
B. Emergency Repair Works for Highway Structures on ad hoc basis.
Highway structures may include bridges, tunnels, underpasses, retaining walls, footbridges, culverts, camel crossings, etc. This project covers all the structures which are directly maintained by PWA.
The main objective of this contract will be:
• Respond and react to the emergency situation within 24 hours once the contractor is notified by Ashghal to avoid further deterioration/damage to the structure in addition to making the site safe for road users/public.
• Discuss the problem and propose solutions to PWA.
• Carry out the repair and maintenance works as per the approved materials and method statement.
• As the maintenance work of highway structure involve working around live traffic, traffic safety of road users and contractors personnel are of high importance for the PWA. Hence contractor needs to ensure that the required works shall be carried out undertaking traffic safety in according to the Work Zone Traffic Management Guide(WZTMG) with all the required warning signage and equipments like Trailer or Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs).
All works mentioned above shall be carried out in accordance with the specification and as per the Instructions to Tenderers and Bills of Quantities.
